Microsoft has unveiled its next gaming console, called the Xbox Series X, which will be available for the 2020 holiday season, next year.
Sharing the console design and some specs details at the Game Awards Thursday, Microsoft has dubbed the Xbox Series X as its “fastest, most powerful console ever.” Many have noted that could be a preliminary poke of competition at Sony, which has not shared many details about its still rumored, PlayStation 5, which is also expected to launch late next tear.
The Xbox Series X gets a complete design revamp to look more like a desktop than a gaming console, with a sleek, all-black chassis, which can be oriented to stand up or lay flat.
The Xbox Series X will support 4K imaging at 60 frames per second with the capacity to render up to 120FPS through Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). It’s Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) will keep playback running smoothly and highly responsive. The console will also support 8K gaming, vertical and horizontal display orientation and a new Xbox wireless controller.
Hardware includes a custom-designed processor using the AMD Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA architecture, NVMe SSD storage, and a GPU that performs at over eight times the power of the Xbox One and twice the power of the Xbox One X, Microsoft’s Xbox chief, Phil Spencer said in an exclusive interview with GameSpot.
The console will support cloud gaming and will be backward compatible with games from prior models to support “thousands” of titles. It does include a disc slot for the nostalgic.
There are a lot of details still unknown about the Xbox Series X, its price in particular. However, Microsoft will likely have much more to share throughout 2020.
