There are several new smartphones coming to the Nokia brand with a 5G powered model, the Nokia 8.3, as the main attraction. HMD claims this device is compatible with all international 5G bands, making it the first “global 5G” smartphone.
The device itself is a fair upper mid-range model, featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip to enable 5G. It has a 6.81-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 6GB and 8GB RAM options, and 64GB and 128GB internal storage options with MicroSD expansion available, a 4500mAh battery with 18W fast charging, and the Android 10 operating system.
Its rear quad camera set up includes a 64-megapixel main lens with ZEISS Optics and Dual LED flash, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. It also includes a 24-megapixel front-facing camera. Other features include single and dual SIM options, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The Nokia 8.3 is currently set for a summer launch starting at €599 for its 6GB RAM/ 64GB internal storage model, while its 8GB and 128GB internal storage will sell for €649. The device will be available in a Polar Night blue-green color option.
Ideally, Nokia 8.3 users should be able to connect to 5G networks anywhere in the world as HMD Global has also announced its HMD Connect global data roaming service to assist with this feature. Those who sign up with the roaming service will receive a SIM card in the mail and can purchase and manage their data via the HMD connect app. The manufacturer says its service is currently available in over 120 countries, with coverage being added as it collaborates with more networks.
Some have noted that despite having a wide range of 5G compatibility, 600MHz-3.8GHz, the Nokia 8.3 is not able to connect to mmWave 5G. However, most telecom networks also support Sub-6 5G, on which HMD has likely based its claim.
