Mobile SoCs running a 5nm process are quickly becoming the latest tech trend; and while many brands have already begun implementing updated components, reports suggest that MediaTek may not launch its own 5nm chip until 2022.
A leak from Digital Chat Station has revealed MediaTek’s component launch timeline, indicating that the future chip may be called the Dimensity 2000, and that it may power devices by Oppo and vivo in a year’s time. If the leak is accurate, the Dimensity 2000 may become official in the first quarter of 2022.
Details indicate the Dimensity 2000 may introduce the Cortex-X2 architecture to the MediaTek brand, in addition to Cortex-A79 CPU cores and Mali-G79 GPU cores. The latest CPU and GPU by ARM are not yet official, which could give credence to a 2022 timeline. The current Cortex-A78/Mali-G78 GPU cores slated for 2021 devices were announced in May 2020.
Meanwhile, MediaTek may work with 6nm nodes in 2021. With a launch event set for January 20, MediaTek is expected to announce the Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 chips, featuring this manufacturing process. After announcing 7nm chips in 2020, these are the brand’s first components with the 6nm process. They are also expected to power Oppo and vivo devices throughout the year. The rumored Redmi K40 series has also be teased to include the Dimensity 1200 as a hardware feature.
Redmi brand executives have teased that the Dimensity 1200 will rival the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in terms of power. Notably, Qualcomm’s 2019 chip runs a 7nm process. Overall, the Dimensity 1200 is shaping up to be a midrange component.
Other rumored features for the Dimensity 1200/1100 chips include support for LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, Full HD+ displays with 144Hz refresh rate, and 108-megapixel main camera lenses.
