The Project Fi mobile service by Google was limited to a handful of Google associated smartphones for some time but the tech giant has now opened the service up to a host of Android and iOS devices. The MVNO or mobile virtual network operator has also gotten a rebrand and is now called Google Fi.
Those familiar with the service consider Google Fi a budget-friendly network option. Plans start at $20 per month for unlimited calls and texts plus $10 per gigabyte of data, and users can add up to 6GB onto a plan. While users don’t pay for data overages, data speeds are limited after 15GB. However, if subscribers use less than their data maximum they get refunded for the data they didn’t use. International data usage is also available for 170 counties.
For cheaper service, users will have to sacrifice some common features, such as spam blocking and Wi-Fi calling and texts. Apple devices also lose features, such as Visual Voicemail.
However, Google Fi is designed to give users the strongest cellular connection possible, using bandwidth from T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular to connect to the strongest signal in a given area. Overall, the service is a decent no-contract option for those who don’t mind a lot of frills.
Google Fi is also running a promotion offering new subscribers who bring their own phone and port an extension number to the network one month of free service. Customers must sign up for Google Fi by December 16 and activate their device on the service by December 31 to take advantage of this deal.
Check out the below the devices that are now compatible with Google Fi. Keep in mind these devices are newer models that run Android 7.0 Nougat or higher. There are also some restrictions on which Apple devices are compatible with Google Fi.
