“Qualcomm live stream, Snapdragon flagship chip and 5G details ahead of annual tech summit”

Qualcomm will be sharing details about its latest mobile advancements at its annual Tech Summit in Hawaii next week. Among the expected highlights are the announcement of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon flagship mobile chip and live 5G speed tests using Qualcomm’s X50 modem.

For those missing out on the sunny Hawaiian convention, Qualcomm will provide a live stream of the summit keynote for remote watching. The new Snapdragon chip is expected to be announced on December 4, while Qualcomm will likely discuss its plans for 5G integration on December 5 and 6.

Reports have long suggested that Qualcomm may call its new mobile processor the Snapdragon 8150, but there is a possibility that is not the chip’s official name. As a successor of chips like the 2016 Snapdragon 835 and the 2017 Snapdragon 845, the 2018 chip could be called the Snapdragon 855.

Qualcomm could also potentially do a flagship rebrand in accordance with the introduction of 5G connectivity. This would reveal a whole new name for its premium chips. There’s no indication on whether the name would keep the well-known Snapdragon moniker. However, new branding would likely differentiate Qualcomm’s flagship tier chips from the rest of its mobile processor lineup.

Making the change now would be ideal when the chip maker has released several processors in the affordable premium range, including some flagship features, but also other truncated specs to keep prices low.

PCMag suggests the naming could fall in line with Qualcomm’s X50 modem, which will enable 5G capability on Snapdragon-powered devices.
