The Motorola Moto Z4 is now official as the brand’s second smartphone to support 5G. Motorola announced the device in a New York launch event Tuesday, previewing it ahead of its market launch on June 13.
Specs wise, the Motorola Moto Z4 has an interesting affordable set up with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ OLED display with an 85-percent screen-to-body ratio, including teardrop notch, and a 19:9 aspect ratio. However, it runs a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chip and Adreno 608 GPU and has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage with microSD expansion up to 512GB. The prior Motorola Z3 was also not priced as a flagship, but it features a high-end Snapdragon 835 chip, which originally lent to the proposition that premium features were necessary to power 5G. However, the Motorola Moto Z4 could prove otherwise, and be a beacon that the new network standard could easily be accessible to the masses.
Camera features include its 48-megapixel rear lens with f/1.7 aperture and its 25-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture. Motorola is touting a number of camera features, including Night Vision, which software enhances low-light images, and Auto Smile Capture, which triggers a shutter when photograph subjects. Some more common camera features include Cimemagraph, Portrait, AI Portrait Lighting, and Spot Color.
The Motorola Moto Z4 includes a 3,600mAh battery with a 15W USB-C TurboPower charger, which promises hours of battery life in a few minutes of charging, and up to two days of power overall. Users can also enable wireless charging with a Moto Mod. The Z4 also heralds the return of the 3.5mm audio jack.
The Z4 continues to look very Motorola-like, with a basic design that allows the device to be compatible with all of the brand’s current Moto Mods. It features 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 and a 6000 series aluminum frame, as well as a splash-proof nano-coating, though it is not certified as water resistant.
Dimensions on the device are 75×158 x7.35mm and its weight is 156g, making it typically thin and light before the addition of any mods. Motorola is marketing the 5G Moto Mod and the 360-Camera Moto Mod for the Z4, in particular, as the device has a connectivity and photography focus.
For some authentication flare, the Motorola Moto Z4 features an in-display fingerprint sensor, as well as face unlock. Its software includes Android 9 Pie with Google Assistant voice control. Amazon Alexa can also be enabled with a Moto Mod.
Among its connectivity features, the Motorola Moto Z4 supports a Nano-SIM, Bluetooth 5.0, the usual Wi-Fi standard, NFC, and locations services. The device will launch in a Flash Grey color option, as well as a Frost White option a few weeks after its initial release.
Once available, consumers will be able to purchase the Motorola Moto Z4 in a bundle with the 5G Moto Mod for just $439.99 or for $10 per month for 24 months with a new line activation from Verizon. As Motorola’s official carrier partner, consumers will be able to use 5G in currently enabled cities, including Chicago and Minneapolis. Verizon says it has plans to roll out its 5G network to 30 more U.S. cities in 2019.
The Motorola Moto Z4 will also be available in an unlocked bundle with the 360-Camera Moto Mod for $499.99. For this deal, consumers will have to buy the 5G Moto Mod separately and wait for this model to get the software upgrade for 5G network support. The Z4 will also be available at Best Buy, B&H, Amazon, and though Canadian carriers and retailers later this summer.
