The Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Vivo has unveiled at Mobile World Congress Shanghai, a new technology that can charge a smartphone in just 13 minutes.
The technology, called Super FlashCharge 120W, supports charging up to 120W. Vivo demoed the charging mechanism on a device with a 4,000mAh battery, showcasing a 0 to 50 percent power increase in five minutes and a complete charge in another eight minutes.
Fast charging has been a continuous trend among smartphone manufacturers for some time. Currently, many fast charging mechanisms support charging up to 20W and allow users to top off their battery power in short spurts of charging. However, several coming fast charging standards promise to a complete charge in a matter of minutes.
In addition to Vivo, the Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi is also developing its own next generational power mechanism, called Super Charge Turbo, supporting charging up to 100W. Vivo’s sister brand, Oppo offers the Find X smartphone, which features a Super VOOC charging system that supports charging up to 50W. The mechanism allows the device to go from zero to 100 percent charge in 35 minutes.
There is no word on whether Super FlashCharge 120W will come to any Vivo smartphones in the foreseeable future, but the manufacturer did also preview at MWC Shanghai, the vivo iQOO 5G as its first commercial mobile device with the new network standard.
Vivo noted that the component design of the iQOO 5G requires the device to have a reliable power source. The device features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip and an external Qualcomm X50 modem, meaning the modem is not built into the main processing chip. Additionally, the smartphone includes four antennas to enable 5G, in addition to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi bands. Vivo will likely share more details about the smartphone when it officially launches sometime during the third quarter.
