Netgear and Harman Kardon have come together for an interesting partnership, introducing the Orbi Voice smart speaker, which pairs with Netgear’s Mesh Wi-Fi routers. The partnership brings together Wi-Fi expansion and voice assistants, two products that have seen rapidly increased consumer interest in recent years.
Mesh-Wifi has become a popular method of extending Wi-Fi coverage in large spaces, especially residential homes. Spaces equipped with Mesh-Wifi may have a main Wi-Fi router in one location and satellite routers, typically one to two, in other locations to pick up connectivity where it may get weak due to the distance from the main router. By now pairing Mesh-Wi-Fi with a smart speaker that delivers high-quality audio, Netgear and Harman Kardon have hit several pain points in the voice assistant category.
The companies focused on ensuring the Orbi Voice not only has no sound distortion but can also pick up user voices when its volume is at maximum. The pod is a front-facing speaker with one tweeter, one woofer, and a flexible bass port.
For its voice assistant aspect, the device is powered by Amazon Alexa and includes four microphones. Its control center is on the top of the device and includes a motion sensor. From here users can manually turn the music off and control the volume by moving a finger along a curved band. Users can also mute the microphones, which completely cuts them off from the power source. Turning the mics back on must then be done manually.
Paired with Netgear’s Mesh Wi-Fi stations, users can move the Orbi Voice around their space without having to worry about decreased connectivity. Ideal locations for the Orbi Voice include the bedroom, living room, den, and kitchen, according to Netgear and Harman Kardon.
The Tri-Band Orbi Satellite that accompanies the Orbi Voice device runs 2.2 Gbps max wireless speed and includes 2-gigabit ethernet ports. The satellite allows users to connect to a single network name and have no disruption of service if moving the Orbi Voice or other connected devices around a space.
Netgear and Harman Kardon have also partnered with several content services, including, Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music, Tune In, Deezer, iHeart Radio, Saavan, Audible and Amazon Kindle. Connecting services to Orbi Voice is simple, and users can even share their Wi-Fi credentials with friends and family so they can connect these services to the smart speaker and deliver their music playlists and other content.
The Orbi Voice will be available in late-September for $299 for the standalone speaker or for $429 paired with an Orbi Satellite Router. The device is currently available for pre-order.
