The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL hit stores Thursday, but if you haven’t yet picked up your handset, you may want to hold off and learn about the current SIM lock issues taking place with Best Buy and Verizon branded models.
While the new Pixel 3 models are supposed to be unlocked for use on any carrier, some consumers purchasing devices from Best Buy claim they have had issues getting their smartphones to work with SIM cards from other carriers. Best Buy and Verizon have a carrier deal for the Pixel 3; however, the device should technically work on any network.
Verizon’s LTE devices are supposed to be SIM unlocked and easily transferable to other carriers, but the network began backtracking on an agreement with the FCC earlier this year. Now, the Pixel 3, a device which is supposed to be the poster of restriction-free usage is caught in a scandal. New Pixel 3 owners claim they’ve received “SIM card isn’t supported” messages from devices after inserting their SIM cards from other carriers.
For now, prospective Pixel 3 buyers should play it safe and purchase the device from Google’s online store. Google has also hardware stores in New York City (131 Greene Street) and Chicago (1704 North Damen Avenue), where consumers can purchase unlocked models until December 31.
Some users on Reddit claim they have been able to unlock their Pixel 3 handsets and use SIM cards from other carriers after having a Verizon SIM card installed for at least 24-hours. However, this may not be a plausible solution as most smartphone users don’t happen to have an extra Verizon SIM card lying around. Plus, there is no full guarantee this method will work.
Android Central noted taking a SIM locked Pixel 3 to a Verizon retailer may be an option, but this may also be a tossup as unlocking can be at the discretion of the Verizon representative.
The Pixel 3 sells starting at $799, while the Pixel 3 XL starts selling at $899.
