“Samsung Galaxy S10 release date could get rid of facial recognition feature”

The Samsung Galaxy S10 may release with only one biometric authentication feature if recent reports are to be believed. The Korean manufacturer is expected to introduce an in-display fingerprint scanner on its upcoming flagship, according to ET News. In turn, Samsung may get rid of the facial recognition feature that has been included on several recent high-end Galaxy models.

If true, the Galaxy S10 would be the first Samsung flagship since the Galaxy S7 to release with just one biometric authentication feature. Samsung devices ever since the Galaxy Note 7 have released with both fingerprint and iris scanning biometrics, in addition to more standard options, such as password, pin or pattern. However, facial recognition has long been criticized as not being secure enough for information-sensitive functions, such as mobile payments, especially on Android devices.

This is something Samsung may want to address, considering it has its own mobile payment system, Samsung Pay. News about the payment option has been dormant for some time. Previously, the company explained that Galaxy users could set a more secure authentication option for mobile payments and use facial recognition as a quick unlock method. Apple has since released several iPhone models, using facial recognition as its only biometric option, which is rated as secure enough to use for mobile payment systems. This could leave consumers rethinking their options for safe smartphones.

Typically a trendsetter in the mobile market, Samsung seems to have taken more of an Apple approach in introducing the new biometric feature. The manufacturer seems to be observing how other companies implement in-display fingerprint sensors and how the technology is maturing. The Galaxy S10 is expected to use an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor developed by Qualcomm, which is now in its third generation. Samsung may even test the sensor on a mid-range device to release in China ahead of the flagship launch.

Meanwhile, other companies are getting U.S. consumers acquainted with in-display fingerprint sensors. OnePlus announced its OnePlus 6T flagship on Monday and the device is the first in the U.S. to include the feature. The OnePlus 6T still has facial recognition, in addition to an in-display fingerprint scanner. Executives admitted the company added the feature for security purposes. Several prior OnePlus models have had rear-facing fingerprint sensors.

Samsung may also want to make a splash for the tenth anniversary of its Galaxy S line. Critics have noted that Samsung has played it safe with several of the most recent flagships, but it may have been exactly the company’s strategy. Introducing an in-display fingerprint scanner could open Samsung up to new design options, such as a truly bezel-free display. The manufacturer may be able to continue its resistance in joining the top-notch trend. If successfully implemented, Samsung releasing a premium tier full-display device with no screen obstructions could be a major way to set itself apart in the U.S. market.
