“Pixel 3 Lite could bring back the headphone jack”

There may soon be a new Pixel 3 model on the market featuring a 3.5mm headphone jack if rumors are to be believed. Details have recently leaked that Google may be planning a mid-range device, potentially called the Pixel 3 Lite. The smartphone may include features that are more familiar to consumers at a time when smartphone makers are adding many strange new features to devices, and removing many common features from devices.

Leakster, Rozetked shared images and specs for the still unconfirmed smartphone. The Pixel 3 Lite may have a plastic frame instead of the aluminum casing seen on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the second generations of Pixel smartphones to release without a headphone jack. Like many smartphone makers, Google decided to remove the headphone jack from its premium devices to coincide with hardware and design cues, such as larger batteries and thinner bezels. Pixel devices have also gained hefty price tags over the years, with the base Pixel 3 model starting at $800.

Price details for the Pixel 3 Lite have not been revealed, but prospective specifications for the Pixel 3 Lite include a 5.56-inch IPS display with a 2,220 x 1,080 resolution, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chip and Adreno 615 GPU, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 2,915mAh battery, and a 12-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front-facing camera. While not mentioned, the smartphone would likely run the latest Google software, Android 9 Pie.

Overall, these specs would coincide with a more consumer-friendly price for the Pixel 3 Lite, which would make it more similar to the Nexus line of Google’s past. In its heyday, Google released devices in the $300 to $500 range, primarily for the purpose of showcasing its Android software in its pure form without modifications from third-party manufacturers. Today’s Pixel devices are now a showcase for Google’s latest high-powered technologies, including new camera features and new Google Assistant, AI features.

Smartphones have never been a major volume sale for Google so targeting the premium market was an understandable gamble in an attempt to earn a profit. However, many international smartphone makers have now cornered the affordable premium market that old Nexus devices helped develop. During their time, Nexus devices released with flagship tier chips and memory and storage capacities that were still controversial for many smartphone makers. Now, devices including the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T are quickly gaining fans in the U.S. for the same reason. The recently released OnePlus 6T with an in-display fingerprint sensor, selling for $550. The OnePlus 6 includes a headphone jack and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 flagship chip, selling for $550.

Google still sells the Pixel 2, starting at $650. There is no telling whether the Pixel 3 Lite would be more or less expensive compared to Google’s year-old smartphone, which for all intents and purposes would still be more powerful specs wise. The current market is such that Apple’s idea of a budget smartphone is the $750 iPhone XR, and it takes an iOS device two years to officially dip below the $500 (iPhone 7).

If introduced, the Pixel 3 Lite seems like an odd addition to the Google family, especially after the flagship models have already released. It will likely need an extremely forgiving price to compete amid the barrage of device that released in the last month, and especially against the new flagships set to release in the coming months.
