“What the Samsung Galaxy S10 leaks tell us about its triple-camera setup”

Rumors have long suggested that some Galaxy S10 models may release with a triple-lens camera setup. The claim may now be solidified with what appears to be a live leak of the Galaxy S10 with three lenses set up horizontally on the rear of the handset.

One image originated from the Chinese social media platform, Weibo, while Slashgear anonymously received another image, both revealing the same type of camera setup on a Samsung device. Many mockups and renders can be fashioned in a way that makes them look extremely realistic, but Slashgear’s image, in particular, does appear to be an actual photograph.

These leaks still don’t confirm much about the Galaxy S10 camera system because Samsung also makes several prototypes of its upcoming devices that include features and designs that never make it on to the final product. Its easy for the images to make it into the rumor mill, especially once they’re scrapped. Still, leaked prototypes can give other hints about what Samsung has planned for the Galaxy S10.

We can deduce that the Galaxy S10 may favor a horizontal camera setup as opposed to the vertical set up we saw on the Galaxy S9 Plus dual-camera. The images also reveal no rear-facing fingerprint scanner, which lends favor to the rumor suggesting Samsung may adopt an in-display fingerprint scanner for the Galaxy S10.

Still, many are in fact expecting Samsung to release a flagship model with a triple-lens setup. Rumors suggest the Galaxy S10 Plus and Galaxy S10 5G versions may have three lenses, while the standard Galaxy S10 model and possibly even a Galaxy S10 Lite version may feature a dual-lens setup.

Samsung has already launched the Galaxy A7 (2018) featuring a 24-megapixel standard lens, a 5-megapixel depth lens, and an 8-megapixel wide angle lens as its main camera. The affordable-premium model could be a testbed for Samsung’s upcoming flagship, though it is likely the Galaxy S10 Plus wouldn’t have lenses with such a high megapixel count. The Galaxy S9 Plus dual-camera features two 12-megapixel lenses.

Currently, there is no word on what configuration of lenses the Galaxy S10 may have. Manufacturers tend to choose between standard, depth, wide angle, and telephoto lenses for their multiple camera setups. Depth lenses have been favored for bokeh effects and portrait mode photography, but wide angle lenses are becoming more popular for great landscape shots, and telephoto for the option zoom out wide or in to focus on a particular subject.

Whatever its camera setup, the Galaxy S10 is sure to be a top option among mobile cameras in 2019. Rumors suggest Samsung will likely keep its traditional February/March launch date for the device.
