Google has let the cat out of the bag that there is a Pixel 4 smartphone on the way, but that hasn’t stopped leaksters from getting a hold of information that the tech giant has not shared.
Pricebaba and Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka OnLeaks, have shared new Pixel 4 XL renders and camera details, showcasing its 6.25-inch diagonal display, which features a thick top bezel and thin bottom chin. The sources believe Google may outfit the device with a dual-lens setup for its front-facing camera, which may also include sensors for a facial recognition mechanism similar to Apple’s Face ID. Some also suggest the sensors could be a set up for Google’s Project Soli radar chip, which could bring gestures controls to the Pixel 4.
Still, the body of the device shows no capacitive fingerprint sensor, which suggests Google may commit to obscure biometrics on the Pixel 4. If not a Face ID unlock and authentication feature, the Pixel 4 could include an in-display fingerprint sensor, as many have noted.
While the current Pixel 3 devices feature rear-facing capacitive fingerprint sensors, Google has made it clear, with the introduction of the Pixel 3a that it will be differentiating between standard and premium features on its future devices. The back panel of the Pixel 4 will likely be made of glass, according to Pricebaba. Many Android device makers have moved toward higher-end build materials for flagships, making the rear-facing fingerprint sensors a liability on more fragile designs.
Despite the possible material upgrade, a primary feature on Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 smartphone will be its camera systems. The recent leaks shed more light on what is likely a triple-lens set up with a LED flash within a square camera bump. Prior reports suggest the Pixel 4 may include a standard lens, a 16-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 3D ToF sensor. The device may also introduce an optical zoom feature, which is currently one of the major trends among mobile camera setups.
According to OnLeaks, the Pixel 4 XL will have 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm, with a thickness of 9.3mm at the camera bump. Other previously reported specs may include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, 6GB RAM, a USB-C, Android Q, and no 3.5mm audio jack.
We don’t know if we will hear more from Google before the official Pixel 4 launch, but the 2019 smartphone series will likely be unveiled sometime in October, much like its predecessors.
