“LG G8 follow up may accompany a foldable at IFA launch in September”

LG may have a pretty big showcase at the IFA conference next month with at least two devices slated for launch in Berlin.

Most recently, details have surfaced about a device called the LG G8X, which may be an updated version of the LG G8 ThinQ that launched earlier this year. Renders have surfaced via Pricebaba and Onleaks that reveal a device with a waterdrop notch for more screen real estate and a camera set up with at least two lenses.

The LG G8X may feature a 6.2-inch display and may have 159.3 x 75.8 x 8.5mm dimensions. While these features may not seem that exciting, the renders also note that there appears to be no capacitive fingerprint sensor button on the LG G8X. This could suggest the smartphone may have an in-display fingerprint sensor. If accurate, the feature would be a first for LG. The renders also reveal a USB-C port as well as a 3.5mm audio jack, which is becoming even more of a rarity in the mobile space.

The Korean manufacturer has also confirmed the date of its IFA keynote for September 6 and teased that it may announce its first foldable device. Many wonder if this device will be called the LG V60, as a successor to the LG V50 that was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February. The device was coupled with a case featuring a second screen that users could open for more functionality or close for easy transport and handling. If accurate the LG V50 could have been the preamble to a foldable smartphone.

While none of the major foldable smartphones announced so far have made it to market, it could still be a viable race for manufacturers to see if they can be the first to get the new form factor in the hands of customers. The Samsung Galaxy Fold is expected to release to market in the coming weeks but an exact date had not been confirmed. The Huawei Mate X launch appears to be on hold indefinitely as the manufacturer sorts out larger issues.

This has given LG and other manufacturers a considerable amount of time to observe the pitfalls of their rivals and possibly have a much smoother unveiling and release. However, we will have to wait until September to see if LG dares to take on the new form factor.
