“T-Mobile’s John Legere as CEO of WeWork? Why the carrier disrupter is being considered”

Recent reports from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and CNBC suggest that T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere is being vetted for the CEO position at the workspace hosting company, WeWork. While unconfirmed, the news is interesting due to the immense overlapping that is already implicated in the move.

Reports suggest that Legere is being considered for the position due to his experience in overhauling the once failing T-Mobile into a highly competitive U.S. mobile carrier. Currently, WeWork is flailing amid the bad business decisions of its former CEO, Adam Neumann.

However, T-Mobile is currently in the middle of a merger with Sprint, which is owned by the Japanese multinational firm, SoftBank. The conglomerate also recently took hold of WeWork, investing in and restructuring the company and placing and place Sprint’s CEO, Marcelo Claure at the helm as executive chairman.

Meanwhile, the T-Mobile and Sprint deal remains in limbo due to several state-level lawsuits attempting to block the merger, though it has been confirmed by federal entities, including the Department of JusticeĀ and the Federal Communication Commission.

Legere appears to be a viable candidate for the role due to his mercurial nature and bullish strategies of turning around the public image of companies. Softbank may be hoping that his popularity will translate well with the workspace firm that stakes its brand in a comfortable and welcome office environment. However, Legere lacks the experience in commercial real estate that may truly be needed to get WeWork on its feet, NYT noted.

He may not be a shoo-in, as Legere is reportedly only one of several candidates being vetted for the CEO position. If Legere was to take on the role at WeWork, he would have to move on from T-Mobile, in which case President and COO Mike Sievert will succeed him as CEO, according to CNBC.
