The fast-charging trend continues with new devices that are set to feature power rates of over 100W. The Chinese brand, Oppo, in particular, has teased it will announce a smartphone with a 125W charging rate on July 15.
Currently not much is known about the device that may include this feature. So far most of the attention is focused on the charging rate rather than any particular smartphone. Some also consider that many Chinese brands have released a number of teasers as marketing stunts.
Never the less, leaksters indicate the claim for this standard will be the ability to charge a 4,000mAh battery from 0 to 100-percent in 10 minutes. This would be a new record in charging ability on mobile devices. In comparison, many current quick charging standards boast the ability to add up to 50 percent power to a device’s battery in 10 to 15 minutes.
Oppo is already known for its 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging standard, which is included in the Oppo Find X2 series and the OPPO Reno Ace. So far, 65W is the highest charging speed consumers have seen on the market. Prior to that, the Oppo Find X launched in 2018 with the 50W SuperVOOC standard.
The brand also has midrange smartphones in its Realme subbrand, which include 30W fast charging, a feature that is still being introduced to many premium tier devices from rival companies. Even Realme is rumored to be announcing its own 100W+ “Ultra Dart” fast charging standard later this month, which is set to be able to a one-third additional charge to a 4,000mAh battery in three minutes.
iQOO 120W ultra-fast charging technology
There are currently several other Chinese brands boosting their fast charging technology at the moment. Vivo’s subbrand, iQOO announced Monday, its own 120W ultra-fast charging technology, which is supposed to charge a 4,000mAh battery from zero to full in 15 minutes. The brand is expected to announce its first smartphone with this charging standard in August. Current rumors suggest the device could be the iQOO Pro 3 5G, which is rumored to feature the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus chip.
iQOO detailed that the new technology functions across two 2,000mAh battery cells within a smartphone, The simultaneous charging of these batteries at 60W (5V/12A) is what enables the fast charging ability. The 6C battery type is also a supposed industry-first for mobile devices. Additionally, devices with this standard will include a VC liquid cooling technology to ensure a regulated core temperature. The brand claims the standard allows for a 50 percent increase in battery power in a five-minute charge.
More upcoming fast charge standards
Among other brands showcasing the next generation of fast-charge technology, Xiaomi actually beat both Oppo and iQOO to the punch by demoing its 100W standard in 2019. Xiaomi claims its “Super Charge Turbo” technology can charge a 4000mAh smartphone from zero to 100-percent in 17 minutes, with a zero to 50 percent burst in 7 minutes. The brand has not announced any official plans to release devices with this standard and discussed the challenges with perfecting the technology earlier this year. However, with other smartphone makers now ready to bring their own super-fast-charging products to market consumers may not have to wait much longer to see a similar device from Xiaomi. The brand has recently teased what could be the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4, which could be a good candidate to feature super-fast-charging.
