“T-Mobile enables 988 emergency number for mental health services”

T-Mobile has enabled a new emergency number, which will allow dialers to quickly access mental health support. Using the number 988 will now connect people in need to counselors at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL).

The standard number for the NSPL is 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK). The 988 emergency number will serve as a shortcut to this service, where callers will have access to 180 crisis centers nationwide to ensure that they can get in touch with someone who can help them with their mental health needs.

This move is apart of an initiative set forth by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which voted in July to have 988 stand as a designated emergency number. US carriers have until July 2022 to activate the service. T-Mobile claims it is the first carrier to do so, noting it was urged to enable the number early due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer, Abdul Saad called establishing the number a “matter of urgency,” due to the current times, which is only heightened by the coming holiday season.

Currently, the service works only for wireless voice calls. Sending a text will yield a response recommending to call the 988 number for assistance. However, the NSPL does have online chats available for those who prefer this form of communication.

Other carriers are expected to follow suit with enabling the 988 emergency number in time, with both AT&T and Verizon confirming to Engadget that the number will be available for wireless voice customers in the coming months.
