“Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 specs include major modem, gaming, and camera upgrades for newly official 2021 smartphone chip”

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 will serve as the primary premium mobile chip for Android devices, coming into 2021. The component was announced Tuesday at Qualcomm’s digital Snapdragon Tech Summit.

While Qualcomm is set to share more details about the Snapdragon 888 during the second day of the summit Wednesday, the component brand has confirmed that a number of smartphone manufacturers are set to launch devices with the chip in 2021, including ASUS, Black Shark, Lenovo, LG, MEIZU, Motorola, Nubia, realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE. In particular, the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 11 is now confirmed to power the chip.

The Snapdragon 888 includes modem, AI engine, elite gaming, and ISP updates among its highlight features. Qualcomm has introduced an integrated Snapdragon X60 5G modem for the chip, which supports 5G carrier aggregation for mmWave and sub-6, in addition to global multi-SIM and dynamic spectrum sharing. The Snapdragon 888 also includes Qualcomm’s 6th generation AI engine and 2nd generation sensing hub, which focus on performance, power efficiency, and lower-power always-on AI processing.

Qualcomm has continued developing its Elite Gaming technology, which supports frame rates up to 144 frames per second (fps), in addition to updateable GPU drivers and desktop forward rendering. The latest Spectra ISP supports photos and video capture at 2.7 gigapixels per second, which is equivalent to 120 photos at a 12-megapixel resolution, a 35 percent speed improvement versus the prior generation.

Many were expecting Qualcomm’s new chip to be the Snapdragon 875, following in step with the Snapdragon 865, which powered 2020 flagship devices. However, the scheme change is a nod to Chinese tradition, in which 888 is a number that symbolizes good luck.
