“LG confirms End of Mobile Business Unit”

LG has confirmed the closing of its mobile business unit. The company announced in a statement on Monday that its board of directors approved the decision in a meeting in Seoul, Korea.

While details on next moves were minimal, LG said it’s exit from the mobile manufacturing space “will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.”

The company added that it will still be in the mobile space, helping to develop future technologies, such as 6G, as well as putting its focus on other business endeavors. LG expects the mobile advancements it developed will continue to be used in the industry, now and in the future.

LG smartphones are set to remain on the market for the time being, and the brand stated it will continue to offer service support and deliver software updates to its devices currently on the market.

Overall, LG expects the mobile business will be shut down completely by July 31.

As for employees of the mobile business, the statement only mentions that those details will be “determined at the local level.”

Some of the brand’s last major devices included the LG Wing, a smartphone with a second screen that swivels horizontally, and the LG Velvet, an option in the mid-range premium space.

Prior to the decision to close its mobile business, LG showcased its rollable display technology at CES 2021 in January.
