“Honor Magic V Official as World Thinnest Foldable and First Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Contender”

The Chinese brand, Honor announced its new foldable smartphone, the Honor Magic V on Monday, marketing the device as the world’s slimmest foldable device.

Honor stretched the inner flat display to a 7.9-inch HDR10+ panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and 2272 x 1984 resolution and 10:9 aspect ratio. Its cover display is 6.45-inches with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 2560 x 1080 resolution. The Honor Magic V outer display has a 21:9 aspect ratio, compared to the 25:9 aspect ratio on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which allows for a wider outer frame and a thinner fold overall.

The Honor Magic V is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 as another one of its highlight features. Other hardware features include 12GB of RAM, 256GB, and 512GB internal storage options, and a 4,750 mAh battery with 66W wired charging, which allows for 0 to 50 percent power in 15 minutes. Its software is Android 12 with a Magic UI 6.0 overlay.

The foldable also includes a fairly elaborate camera system, with three 50-megapixel lenses, one 23mm main, one 13mm ultrawide angle, and one color spectrum. There are two 42-megapixel front cameras, which reside in hole punches on the cover screen and main screen respectively.

One feature the Honor Magic V is missing is an IP rating, so it is not water or dust resistant. It also lacks the under-display Camera technology Galaxy Z Fold 3, which some might argue is a plus as the quality of this feature on Samsung’s foldable is questionable. Additionally, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has stylus support; however, the S-Pen is a sold-separately accessory. Overall, the Honor Magic V releasing without these features has kept its price lower by approximately $300.

The Honor Magic V will be available in Titanium Silver, Black, Burnt Orange color options and will sell for a starting price of CNY 9,999 ($1,570) when it goes on sale in China on January 18. Its higher tier 512GB model will sell for CNY 10,999 ($1,725). Currently, the brand has no plans on selling the Honor Magic V outside of China.
