“Samsung Exynos 2200 SoC Official with AMD-Powered Xclipse GPU”

Samsung announced its Exynos 2200 premium mobile processor on Tuesday, featuring a 4-nanometer EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography) process and a Samsung Xclipse graphics processing unit (GPU).

With the component now official, so is AMD’s collaboration with Samsung on the Xclipse GPU, as it is based on the AMD RDNA 2 Architecture. AMD brings to Samsung’s GPU such functionalities as variable rate shading (VRS), which is typically seen in gaming and desktop chips, as opposed to mobile.

The SoC also includes the latest Arm-based tri-cluster octa-core CPU, which hosts one Cortex-X2 core, three Cortex-A710 cores, and four Cortex-A510 cores. Samsung has yet to share processing speeds for each cluster of the CPU. Additionally, the chip includes a Dual-core NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for AI processing, rounding out its core functionalities.

Samsung Exynos 2200 specs

The Samsung Exynos 2200 is set to have a focus on gaming, 5G connectivity, security, and photography.

The SoC will be able to support 4K displays up to 120Hz and QHD+ displays up to 144Hz, LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.1 storage. It will be able to power camera sensors up to 200-megapixels with single image capture up to 108-megapixels at 30 fps, and dual image capture up to 64-megapixels and 32-megapixels at 30fps. Its video capture records in 4K at 120fps and 8K at 30fps, supporting HDR10+, while video playback is 4K at 240fps and 8K at 60fps.

Connectivity for the chip includes an integrated 5G modem that supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks. It is expected to reach download speeds of up to 7.35Gbps on mmWave networks and 5.1Gbps on sub-6GHz networks, as well as top upload speeds of 3.67Gbps on mmWave networks and 2.55Gbps on sub-6GHz networks. Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, USB 3.2 Type-C, GPS, BeiDou, Galileo, and GLONASS are among the other Exynos 2200 features.

Finally, Samsung’s latest security setup includes a dedicated Secure Element that hosts cryptographic keys. The system loads before the CPU for maximum protection of the SoC and the device it’s powering.

The next-generation SoC is set to power the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Current rumors suggest the device series might be announced on February 8, but could be announced on February 18 if there is any delay. Reports indicate that the Exynos 2200 is already in mass production ahead of the Galaxy S22 launch.
