The latest Withings wearable takes on the traditional timepiece design but includes many high-tech, health-focused features. The smartwatch, called the Withings ScanWatch Horizon, is available as of Tuesday at Withings.com, Amazon, and Best Buy stores, selling for $499.
The wearable is designed in stainless steel and features a rotating bezel and a 43mm screen. It is available in blue or green color options. Strap options include stainless steel and FKM rubber.
As can be seen in prior models, such as the Steel HR, the watch uses one of the traditional dials to showcase biometric stats. Withings has added for the first time on the ScanWatch Horizon, a heart rate and SpO2 monitor for tracking blood oxygen saturation, particularly during sleep.
Other biometric tracking features include ECG, PPG, VO2 Max, sleep monitoring, and an altimeter for tracking floors traveled. The brand notes that its product is FDA cleared to perform all of the functions advertised; however, these scans should not stand in place of any medical diagnosis.
The ScanWatch Horizon is also intended to pair well with fitness and includes automatic activity tracking, with the ability to detect common movements such as walking, running, and swimming, with the ability to collect data on a user’s distance and calories burned. The wearable also includes a training mode, which includes up to 30 activities, for which it can track distance, pace, and altitude.
Despite being designed with luxury in mind, Withings also added some durability to the ScanWatch Horizon with a water-resistance rating of up to 10 atmospheres (ATM). This means the watch can handle activities including swimming, snorkeling, and other watersports. Withings claims that with the assistance of its Android and iOS compatible Health Mate app, users would be able to take an ECG underwater.
Connectivity on the smartwatch is Bluetooth Low Energy and connected GPS, which powers all of its functionalities, including smart notifications. This feature allows users to receive previews of texts, calls, and other customizable alerts, from the watch screen.
The Withings ScanWatch Horizon also supports a battery life of up to 30-days, with an hour of charging taking the wearable to about 80 percent battery life and two hours taking it to full charge.
