The Google Pixel Watch 3 is now official, having been announced at a Made by Google event at the company’s campus in Mountain View, Calif. on Tuesday.
The wearable was unveiled alongside several other products, including the new Pixel 9 series of smartphones and the Pixel Buds Pro 2 earbuds, in addition to a host of new AI features to accompany the latest hardware.
The Google Pixel Watch 3 is available for preorder as of August 13, with the 41mm option starting at $349 and the 45mm option starting at $399. The wearable will go on sale worldwide September 10 at select retailers, the Google Store, and Fitbit.com.
Here’s a rundown highlighting the specs and features of the Pixel Watch 3.
Display
The Google Pixel Watch 3 now comes in two sizes, a 45mm diameter option and a 41mm diameter option, both providing updates over the previous model. The 45mm option has a 40 percent bigger display and 35 percent bigger battery, while the 41mm option has a 10 percent larger display. Both options feature a 3D custom cover display made from Corning Gorilla Glass 5, protecting an Actua display that provides up to 2000 nits brightness and as low as 1 nit brightness in a dark room. The display is always on and supports a response rate between 1 and 60 hertz.
Google Features
The Pixel Watch 3 features the deepest Google integration and any of the brand’s wearables. Notable functions include being able to stream your Nest camera and doorbell from the wearable, controling a Pixel phone camera, use the watch as a TV remote, using Google Maps offline, or taking notes with the Recorder app. The Call Assist feature has also received an update called Hold a Minute, which answers phone calls for you on the Pixel Watch 3 and allows you to pause the call while you find a quiet place to talk.
Fitness Features
The wearable also has built in Fitbit fitness features, turning it into an advanced personal health and fitness device. The Pixel Watch 3 is especially tuned for runners with new features for tracking, planning, guiding, and reflecting on progress. The feature, called Workout Builder allows runners to build custom workouts, add intervals, set targets, build tempo runs. Those who have Fitbit Premium can use AI to develop plans.
Fitbit aids runners with real time guidance during workouts, highly accurate heart rate tracking, which can be specifically tuned for day or night, and run dynamics to show your progress or drop off.
A feature called Daily Bits gives you a morning brief within Fitbit of your current state after prior running sessions, calculating a readiness score , cardio load, daily target load from your last run.
Loss of Pulse Detection
Google is also introducing to the Pixel Watch 3 a new feature called Loss of Pulse Detection, which is a first of its kind that is able to detect if someone had lost their pulse and is unresponsive. Various sudden loss of pulse events can include cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or circulatory failure. The wearable can then call emergency services with key information, such as the person’s location, to get them assistance as soon as possible and provide life saving aid. The Loss of Pulse Detection features will be available in various European countries and the U.K. in September.
Hardware, Software, and Design
For hardware, the Pixel Watch 3 runs the Qualcomm SW5100 with Cortex M33 co-processor. Both models include 2GB of SDRAM and 32GB of eMMC flash storage. The 41mm option includes a 307mAh battery and the 45mm option a 420mAh battery, both supporting up to 36 hours with battery saver mode. Software wise, the wearables support Wear OS 5.0 and are compatible with most smartphones running on Android 10.0 or later.
The Pixel Watch 3 casing is made of recycled aluminum, while its active band is made of fluoroelastomer with soft-touch coating. Color options for the 45mm options include Matte Black Aluminum case / Obsidian Active Band, Polished Silver Aluminum case / Porcelain Active Band, and Matte Hazel Aluminum case / Hazel Active Band. Color options for the 41mm option include Matte Black Aluminum case / Obsidian Active Band, Polished Silver Aluminum case / Porcelain Active Band, Champagne Gold Aluminum case / Hazel Active Band, and Polished Silver Aluminum case / Rose Quartz Active Band. The 45mm is 12.3mm in height and 37g in weight, without band. The 41mm is 12.3mm in height and 31g in weight without band. The wearable is rated both 5 ATM and IP68 for water resistance.
