Google could be working on a second-generation Pixel Tablet that would make the model more suitable for productivity. After the May 2022 announcement and June 2023 launch of the original Google Pixel Tablet, the product stood out as a connectivity and entertainment hub. However, the brand may want to expand the potential of a future model by adding support for productivity-based features, according to Android Authority.
A source at Google told the publication that the company is now testing a Pixel Tablet 2 prototype model with an attachable keyboard cover. The keyboard would connect to the tablet with pogo pins and would also be able to fold into a kickstand to hold up the tablet. Several Android tablets from other brands have been released to the market after the original Pixel Tablet with keyboard support. The source also claims that Google experimented with a keyboard and stylus for the first-generation tablet, but ultimately moved forward without them due to quality issues.
Android Authority noted that Google used software updates to add more productivity-centered features to its tablet. What remains is the need for Google-branded accessories. However, no claims about Google’s plans for its future devices can be confirmed so far– they all remain in the realm of rumors.
Google is very in tune with all the developments in the industry. It partnered with Lenovo to launch the Chromebook Duet 11 over the summer, which supports keyboard cover and stylus accessories. It also supports ChromeOS as its software for a productivity focus. Because of its keyboard support the device is seen as less of a tablet and more of a 2-in-1 laptop. Even so, such collaborations can be in-house cues for the development of its own devices.
The rumors surrounding the Pixel Tablet 2 are minimal overall. There is word that the tablet is codenamed Kiyomi, after the Japanese citrus fruit. If accurate, it would follow the original Pixel tablet codename Tangor, another citrus exotic fruit. The device is expected to release sometime in 2025.
The Google source also detailed the Pixel Tablet 2 is set to see a camera update from the 8-megapixel lens on the first-generation tablet. The publication projects the coming tablet could see a processor update from the Tensor G2 chip in the original Pixel Tablet, with the current Tensor G4 or the rumored Tensor G5 as options. The publication also had word that a third-generation Pixel Tablet is expected to release in 2027, with what would be a modified Tensor G6 chip. If accurate, it would seem Google is falling into a two-year release cycle with its tablet, making a Tensor G4 chip a likely candidate for the Pixel Tablet 2.
