Android 9 Pie has been available for two months but users would probably never know it if they looked at the system status in their smartphone settings. Android devices are most likely running Nougat, Marshmallow or Lollipop than they are Pie (I’m still Team Poptart if anyone was wondering).
So far there are not enough devices running Android 9 Pie for it to even show up on the Android distribution chart, but there are devices out there running the latest Android operating system.
In the coming months, there will likely be more devices releasing with Android Pie than updating to the new software. Still, Google’s Project Treble is in effect and the tech company has partnered with a number of smartphone manufacturers to get the latest Android smartphones on to the latest devices as quickly as possible.
There a rundown of devices currently running the official Android 9 Pie software.
Google Pixel devices
Of course, Google’s own flagship smartphones would get first dibs at Android Pie. The Pixel/Pixel XL and the Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL have been running the latest OS since it released in early August. Google also announced the new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL earlier this week, which will run Android Pie out of the box when they release October 18.
Essential Phone
The Essential Phone received the Android Pie update the same day it was released. Rumors suggest there is an Essential Phone 2 in development. Perhaps that device will release with Pie as well.
OnePlus 6/OnePlus 6T
The OnePlus 6 is likely the most popular phone outside of the Pixel devices currently running Android Pie. The manufacturer ran a rather seamless update campaign for the device, making beta versions readily available and rolling the stable version of Pie out to consumers just 45 days after its official release. Recent reports indicate the upcoming OnePlus 6T will run Android Pie out of the box. OnePlus has been very open about many details on the device but has not confirmed its operating system publicly. The device will be announced on October 30 and will go on sale on November 6.
Sony Xperia devices
The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are Sony’s first devices to update to Android Pie. The update originally scheduled for November is surely a pleasant surprise for many users. Sony is one of Google’s project Treble partners and has several other Xperia smartphones in like for the Pie update. Sony also announced the Xperia XZ3, in September, which runs Android Pie out of the box.
Others
Users should expect the fastest Android Pie updates from manufacturers including Nokia, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi. The recently announced Nokia 7.1 released with Android Oreo but is set to update to Android Pie in November. Vivo devices are scheduled to update in fall 2018, while most Oppo devices are set to update in early 2019. Xiaomi has a rather scattered rollout with Pie updates expected to start in late 2018 but may contiue until late 2019.
While Huawei is not apart of Google’s Project Treble Partnership, the manufacturer is currently releasing beta versions of Android Pie on select Mate and Honor devices. Motorola has also promised a fall update for a number of devices despite not being a Project Treble partner.
