Sony didn’t have a major focus on smartphones during CES 2019 last week, but the manufacturer is already gearing up for Mobile World Congress (MWC), where it will likely announce the Sony Xperia XZ4 smartphone. The flagship has already made its rounds in the rumor mill, but Sony has now begun sending out press invites for a launch event.

According to the invite, the event will take place on February 25 at 8.30 a.m. CET, in Barcelona. Mobile World Congress starts on February 25, so there is no mistaking that this event is associated with the trade show. However, the accompanying teaser doesn’t give any details about what we can expect from the device to be launched. What looks like a sunset, could perhaps be something to do with the Sony Xperia XZ4 display, but the teaser is extremely vague.
So far, the Sony Xperia XZ4 has turned up on the AnTuTu benchmark database, with the highest performance score for an Android smartphone. If true, it could potentially beat out the many 5G devices expected to launch in 2019, though the Xperia XZ4 itself is not expected to power 5G.
Preliminary specs do suggest a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip for the smartphone. This chip, in particular, is slated to enable 5G on a number of upcoming devices, however, Sony is known for not immediately jumping on the tech trend bandwagon.
Other standard specs for the Sony Xperia XZ4 may include a 6.5-inch display with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 6GB of RAM, and a 3,900mAh battery. Sony may make some slight tweaks to the device’s design, but the Xperia XZ4 surely won’t deviate much from Sony’s general design language.
