“Android Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 updates expected for US and Canadian carriers soon”

Update 1/29: The Xfinity Mobile network by Comcast is now updating Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus models to Android Pie in the U.S. Users can check for the update by accessing Settings > Software update, but if already set, the update should hit devices automatically. With updates now underway, major American carriers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint may soon follow with their own rollouts. Currently, there is no word on if or when the Galaxy Note 9 will update on Xfinity Mobile or other U.S. networks. Android Pie updates on Canada’s Rogers network have not yet begun.

The Android 9 Pie updates for North American Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9 Plus models may begin as early as next week if recent reports are accurate. A rollout timeline for the Canadian carrier, Rogers has surfaced, indicating it will begin updating its Galaxy Note 9 models on February 4, and Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus models on February 11.

Once this rollout is underway, U.S. carriers will likely follow soon after. Updates may be staggered still, depending on the carrier, as they all have their own testing and certification protocols for new software. Currently, there is no word on when other Canadian carriers will begin their Android updated for Samsung’s 2018 flagships.

On board with Android Pie for the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9 Plus is Samsung’s new One UI interface. The overlay is expected to make the users experience minimalistic and task oriented.

The Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9 Plus have been receiving the Android 9 Pie update in several international markets since December 2018. Unlocked models, in particular, tend to get software updates before carrier devices, due to the software coming directly from the manufacturer.

Samsung is set to announce its 2019 flagship on February 20. This device, likely the Galaxy S10, will run Android 9 Pie and One UI out of the box. Often, Samsung will do its best to get all prior year models updated to the current Android software before releasing a new premium device to the market. The upcoming release could be another clue to the Android update timeline for Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9 Plus in the U.S. and Canada.

Samsung is still not apart of Google’s Project Treble initiative to help get new software on to current Android devices in a timely fashion. Android Pie has been available since August.
