“Huawei Mate X 5G smartphone billboard spotted ahead of MWC 2019”

Foldable devices and 5G are slated to be among the main trends for MWC 2019 and a recent leak doubles down on Huawei’s plan to showcase a two-for-one device during the tech conference.

An image of a billboard advertising a device called the Huawei Mate X surfaced on a Chinese social media platform and Twitter Friday. While unconfirmed, many believe the billboard has been posted somewhere in Barcelona and will likely be revealed when Huawei unveils its device.

The billboard falls in line with prior leaks and hints that suggest what when folded, the Huawei Mate X will have two outer displays on either side. This setup is similar to the Royole Flexpai device that has been making its media rounds since October 2018.

There have been few other specifics on the smartphone Huawei has set for a MWC 2019 launch, but the company’s CEO, Richard Yu has confirmed it will showcase a 5G-powered foldable device in Barcelona in February. The manufacturer is hosting a launch event on February 24 and has teased a foldable with the caption “Connecting the future.”

Yu claimed the device would be the world’s first 5G smartphone with a foldable screen. However, Samsung announced its foldable on February 20, having mentioned that the Galaxy Fold will be available in 5G and LTE models when it releases.

The claim will likely come down to the actual market release date of the two devices. The Galaxy Fold will be available to consumers starting April 26. Early rumors suggested Huawei’s device might launch sometime in June, but the company will confirm its plans come Sunday.
