“OnePlus at CES 2020: Concept One smartphone showcases ‘invisible’ camera lenses”

Las Vegas — OnePlus is showcasing its concept device at CES 2020 this week and the product is a version of one of its current smartphone models with the addition of a color-shifting glass technology, which makes the rear camera lenses on the device invisible. The OnePlus Concept One is an update of the OnePlus 7T McLaren edition — but the “electrochromic” glass technology makes for an even more streamlined and luxurious looking device.

OnePlus says this glass technology is used in airplanes and racecars to reduce glare. The concept was inspired by OnePlus’ own partnership with the McLaren motor brand, which specializes in luxury vehicles. Electrochromic glass is treated with an electrical field to alter its makeup and allow it to seamlessly transition from dark to transparent and back. The transition time is only 0.7 seconds, which is less time than it takes to launch the device’s camera app, according to OnePlus.

This feature on the OnePlus Concept one does appear to be largely aesthetic; however, the manufacturer has added a touch of functionality in the pro settings within its camera app. Users can access the ND8 Neutral-density filter, which brings function to the darkened glass. Photographers can manually alter the intensity of the wavelengths and colors of light in an image to bring a level of artistry to a shot.

OnePlus noted that its Concept One smartphone is strictly a prototype at this point and there are no plans to bring the device to market. The device is ultimately a showcase to the brand’s dedication to being at the cutting edge of technology.
