“Future LG smartphones could have low prices and high specs after a rebranding”

LG may be rethinking its device strategy by scrapping its G-series smartphone line, in favor of new smartphone lines that may be more price-conscious, according to recent reports.

Korean news source, Naver claims that the manufacturer has plans to release a device that runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 700-series chip, which could make for a cheaper 5G product. Several devices, such as the Nokia 8.3, the ZTE Axon 11, and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite have been announced with the Snapdragon 765G chip, to enable 5G with price tags under $400. According to the Korean Times, LG has plans to release “mass premium” smartphones with premium specs but a low cost once the G series has been put to rest.

The overall fate of the G-series remains in the air; however, as there is also word that the device maker could still release an LG G9 ThinQ. It could be these mass premium models with a Snapdragon 700-series chip and other features that would make it impressive to higher-end users.

There is also word that LG may adopt some strategies from its older Chocolate, Cookie, and Prada device lines for upcoming products, potentially by way of design. This could be similar to what Motorola did with its Razr foldable, which sported a design similar to the original 2004 model. In comparison, the LG Chocolate series comprised of sliding phones, the LG Prada were sidekick style phones with full physical keyboards, and the LG Cookie devices supported styluses.

LG has already made a major shift from the rest of the market with its foldable iterations, which are slate-style smartphones with a second-screen accessory that gives the handset the foldable device. The second-generation LG V60 ThinQ model recently released as an alternative to the flagship tier LG G9 ThinQ many were expecting. While the device features the top-level, 5G running, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip, it has other truncated features, such as a Full HD+ display, which also makes it slightly cheaper than other high-connectivity smartphones currently on the market.

For eight generations, the LG G Series has introduced bleeding-edge technology to consumers around the world. From super wide-angle cameras to flexible displays to high-fidelity audio and the Quad DAC to 1440p displays, the G Series has consistently been at the forefront of smartphone innovation since 2012. We look forward to sharing more details soon.
