Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 865 Plus as its latest chipset, which is a power boosted version of the Snapdragon 865 platform that was announced in December 2019.
The Snapdragon 865 has already been featured on over 140 devices, some released and some still in development. Devices running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus are set for the market during the third quarter of 2020. Some of these include the ASUS ROG Phone 3 and Lenovo Legion.
The ASUS ROG Phone 3 is set to launch July 22, featuring a 120Hz display, 16GB of RAM, up to 512GB of internal storage, and a 64-megapixel main camera lens, in addition to the Snapdragon 865 Plus. Ths model followed the ASUS ROG Phone 2, which launched in 2019 running the Snapdragon 855 Plus.
The Lenovo Legion doesn’t have a set launch date but is expected to feature a 144Hz FHD display, a 64-megapixel main camera, a side facing pop-up selfie camera, a 5000mAh dual-cell battery that supports USB-C ports, and 90W fast charging, as well as Android 10 with the Lenovo ZUI 12 overlay.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus includes the Snapdragon X55 5G modem-RF to enable the latest mobile network standards, the Kryo 585 CPU with a 3.1 GHz, a 10 percent increase from the previous chip, the Adreno 650 GPU, providing 10 percent faster graphics rendering, and Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 support, allowing for Wi-Fi speeds for up to 3.6 Gbps and Bluetooth 5.2.
With a gaming focus, the chip also includes the latest fifth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine for multimedia optimization including 144 fps gameplay and true 10-bit HDR.
Consumers may also see the Snapdragon 865 Plus on devices by Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, ZTE, and Vivo. Samsung, in particular, has new foldables releasing soon, which could feature the chip. They include Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The original Galaxy Z Flip released in early 2020 with the Snapdragon 855 Plus chip. There have also been murmurs of the Galaxy Note 20 flagship series featuring this chip over the Snapdragon 865; however, those details are uncertain.
