Motorola announced on Thursday a 2021 refresh of its Edge series, featuring an updated camera system, a massive battery, and the latest connectivity standards.
The device is a generation model, the first, which launched internationally in May 2020, and was released in the U.S. in July of last year. The Lenovo-backed brand has since launched several Edge devices, such as the Motorola Edge Plus and the Motorola Edge S; however, making a statement with the original name appears to be important to the smartphone maker.
Specs for the new Motorola Edge include a 6.8-inch HDR10 display with a 144Hz refresh rate, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chip, 6GB and 8GB RAM options, 128GB and 256GB internal storage options, Android 11, and a 5000mAh battery with 30W TurboPower charging. Motorola claims the device is able to gain nine hours of battery life from a 10-minute charge.
The camera set up on the new Motorola Edge includes a 108-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel, ultra-wide lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor, in addition to its 32-megapixel front-facing camera.
Other notable features include 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, an IP52 splash resistance rating, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and ThinkShield for Mobile security software.
The new Motorola Edge will be available in the U.S. starting September 2, at retailers including Best Buy, B&H Photo, Amazon.com, and Motorola.com, with preorders starting August 23. The device is priced at $699.99 but will sell at a $200 discount of $499.99 for its launch.
It will also soon be available through carriers, including Verizon and Spectrum Mobile.
The new Motorola Edge is also expected to have availability in Canada.
