A recent preview video of the Pixel 6a appears to have confirmed that Google has made upgrades to its under-display fingerprint scanner, in comparison to the flagship Pixel 6 models.
The budget model smartphone will be joining the Pixel family in late July; however, Malaysian YouTuber Fazli Halim recently released an early hands-on video of the device, running pre-release software. He mostly discussed specs that have already been confirmed by Google and his personal user experience with the handset.
However, his on-camera comparison of the under-display fingerprint scanners on the Pixel 6a and the Pixel 6 Pro was the highlight demonstration of the video and showed how much faster the Pixel 6a could recognize fingerprints over the Pixel 6 Pro. At about the 4:55 minute mark of the video, Halim is testing the Pixel 6a fingerprint scanner against the Pixel 6 Pro and is able to unlock the Pixel 6a is less effort and with fewer attempts.
Google already previewed the Pixel 6a smartphone at its Google I/O developer conference keynote in May. The brand’s senior vice president of devices and services, Rick Osterloh also confirmed to AndroidCentral that the mid-range device would feature a new fingerprint scanner after the original Pixel 6 series faced considerable criticism for its feature performance since its October 2021 launch. What was supposed to be an easily fixable issue with troubleshooting tips and software patches has persisted for several months after the smartphones hit the market.
The flagship Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models use optical fingerprint scanners from the biometrics brand, Goodix. Currently, Google isn’t expected to stray from using the brand for the Pixel 6a fingerprint scanner, but it isn’t clear what updates will be made on the new smartphone model.
