Amazon has introduced, Create with Alexa, a new AI-powered feature for children that allows them to create unique story time experiences on Alexa smart home devices.

The feature works with Amazon Echo Show devices and is intended to help take storytelling to a new level. Rather than the standard reading of a book, the feature taps into the aspect of creativity that children enjoy when having story time with their parents or other adults in their lives. The feature offers narration, colorful illustrations, sound effects, and background music, all together in a custom story after a child has decided what kind of story they would like to hear.

Parents can have their kids use the prompt “Alexa, make a story,” with the Amazon Echo show and choose a theme, such as “space exploration,” “underwater,” or “enchanted forest.” Then kids can choose and name their main character, for example, an Astronaut named Speedy or an Alien named Fuzzy. Some other aspects kids can add to their story include adjectives, such as “silly,” “happy,” and “mysterious,” as well as a color theme. Once all of the input details are collected, the Amazon Echo Show will draft up and perform a five-to-ten-line story with sound and visual effects included. Kids can use the same prompts and get a different story each time. There is also the ability to save their favorite stories in their personal media gallery for later viewing and listening.

Amazon engineers that worked on the Create with Alexa project noted that privacy was one of the main focuses of the feature, which is largely child-directed. Parents must verify their own consent with the Alexa feature before it can be enabled. As the feature rolls out the brand also noted it will be continuously improved with developments, in voice recognition, graphics quality, sound effects, and music.

Free Create with Alexa templates are available as of Tuesday in English for supported Echo devices in the United States. It is ideal for children ages 4 to 8.
