Samsung has announced its latest set of devices for the second half of the year as of Wednesday, including the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, the Galaxy Tab S9 tablet series, and the Galaxy Watch 6 series.
The manufacturer hosted a live Galaxy Unpacked launch event in Seoul, South Korea, one of its first since 2020, to showcase its host of new products. The foldables, in particular have a focus on performance and customization, with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 being ideal for productivity focused users and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 being ideal for users who value style and expression, Samsung said in a press release.
Both devices have seen updates to their hinges designs, with frames slimmer and lighter than several predecessors. This allows the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to be 13.4mm in width, compared to the 14.2mm width of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The new hinge engineering shaved a few grams of weight from the device, bringing it down to 253 grams, compared to the previous 263 grams. The new foldable also folds completely with no gap. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a folded width of 15.1mm, which is also slightly thinner than both the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 at 15.9mm. The foldable weighs in at 187 grams.
They are also both fashioned with aluminum frames and have their front displays and rear panels protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Additionally, both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are certified as IPX8 water resistant, allowing the devices to studier set up.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 brings nuanced updates to Samsung’s premiere foldable series including its 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable display with a QXGA+ 2176 x 1812 resolution. It 30 percent more brightness than its predecessor at 1750 nits, in addition to an adaptive refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz, 21.6:18 aspect ratio, and 374ppi pixel density. Its cover display is a 6.2-inch HD+ 2316 x 904 resolution Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an adaptive refresh rate between 48 and 120Hz, 23.1:9 aspect ratio, and 402ppi pixel density.
The foldable includes much expected hardware such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB internal storage options, as well as a 4,400mAh dual battery system with 25W fast wired charging support, wireless charging 2.0, and Wireless PowerShare. Software-wise, the device is runs Android 13 with a One UI 5.1.1 overlay. Several of the productivity-focused features include Multi-Window and App Continuity, as well as improvements to the Taskbar, which allow users to easily switch between apps, and the two-handed drag-and-drop feature, which allows users to drag and drop images from Samsung Galaxy, while opening another app with another finger.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has not need much update to its camera rear system as it features a similar set up to that of the prior generation, with a 50-megapixel wide-angle main lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens. The front-facing camera is a 10-megapixel lens, while the inner camera is a 4-megapixel Under Display Camera (UDC).
Connectivity features on the foldable include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, two Nano-SIM slots and one eSIM. Security features include its side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Color options include Icy Blue, Phantom Black, Cream, Gray, and Blue.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 will have a host of accessories available, including a new Slim S Pen Case that houses the stylus alongside the device chassis a Clear Gadget Case, an Eco-Leather Case, and a Standing Case with Strap.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is now available for preorder, starting at $1,799 and will hit the marker on August 11.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has seen some interesting design updates, with the same hinge refashioning, the device also closes completely with no gap. Its new cover screen, called the “Flex Window,” is now expanded to a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a 720 x 748 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and 306 psi pixel density, in comparison to the 1.9-inch cover display on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The main screen is a 6.7-inch FHD+ 2640 x 108 resolution Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex display with an adaptive refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz and a 22:9 aspect ratio.
Hardware on the device similarly includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, as well as 8GB of RAM, and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage options, and a 3,700mAh dual battery set up with 25W fast wired charging, wireless charging, and Wireless PowerShare capabilities.
With Android 13 software and the One UI 5.1.1 overlay, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 uses its cover screen, Flex Window for a number of speciality features, such as for showcasing widgets and the a Multi Widget View option. From this vantage point users can also select quick settings, chat and call logs, and use Quick Reply via a full QWERTY keyboard. The cover screen also offers access to Samsung Wallet features including QR codes, coupons, membership cards, passes, digital keys, among others. The Flex Window is still ideal for the Flex Mode dual preview feature that allows users to utilize the cover screen as a preview viewfinder for the rear camera, as well as using the screen to review, edit, and delete photos without having to open the handset.
The camera setup on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 includes a 12-megapixel wide angle lens, and a second 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, in addition to a 10-megapixel front-facing lens.
Connectivity on the device includes 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, one nano-SIM slot and one eSIM. Security features include a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, as well as Samsung Knox with Knox Vault software.
Color options include Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender colors. It also boasts a few online-exclusive colors, including Gray, Blue, Green, and Yellow. Users can customize their new Flipsuit Case to match the look of their their Flex Window via a changeable NFC card. Similarity, users that also own a Galaxy Watch 6 can match their watch face look to their Flex Window.
