Samsung is currently the sole OLED panel supplier for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series, according to reports coming out of South Korea.
TheElec claims that Samsung, which is known as the world’s largest OLED panel maker has begun manufacturing the iPhone 15 series OLED panels after receiving an offer from Apple to start the process. Typically, Apple works with multiple suppliers to keep the market liquid and mitigate patent infringement; however, is appears only Samsung has gotten the go ahead to begin its manufacturing process at this time.
The other suppliers, BOE and LG Display have not yet received offers to work with Apple on the iPhone 15 series. In particular, the Chinese manufacturer, BOE appears to be having issues with its manufacturing processes for the Dynamic Island cutout area of the display. This might be apart of the delay in securing the contract, according to TheElec.
There is no word on why LG Display had not been awarded a contract to work with Apple on the iPhone 15 series OLED panels.
In prior years, Apple has worked with the mix of the suppliers in different capacities. In 2022, the brand worked with Samsung, BOE, and LG Display on the iPhone 14 series, with Samsung supplying 70 percent of the OLED panels. In 2021, Apple worked with BOE and LG Display on the iPhone 13, while it worked with Samsung and LG Display on the iPhone 12 series in 2020.
The coming Apple smartphone series is expected to include four devices, including the standard iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
