Samsung has expressed its commitment to artificial intelligence by sharing details about an AI feature that will likely be included in the upcoming Galaxy 24 series of devices.
The manufacturer announced the first feature under a “Galaxy AI” branding, AI Live Translate Call. The feature allows for real-time audio and text translation during a phone call. Processes for the feature are done on-device, for security purposes. Samsung noted in a blog post that “private conversations never leave your phone.” Samsung’s AI Live Translate Call seems comparable to Google’s Live Translate AI feature, which has already been around for several device generations, coinciding with the Tensor in-house chip.
It is likely third-party Android devices running the latest Android software would include Google’s Live Translate feature; however, it is designed to work best on the brand’s own Pixel hardware. Similarly, Galaxy AI will be designed to work best on Galaxy smartphones.
Samsung also recently unveiled its Samsung Gauss generative AI model at its 2023 AI Forum event. The company explained that the Gauss model encompasses language, code, and image, indicating the AI Live Translate Call is likely just one of many features that Samsung has to showcase. Gauss language is a model that can draft emails, summarize documents, and translate content. It also works in tandem with smart home products.
Also hinting at Galaxy AI’s availability being “early next year” connects it further to the Galaxy 24 series. Reports suggest Samsung will host a launch event for its upcoming devices in January 2024 shortly after CES.
