“Say Goodbye to Photobombers: OnePlus Debuts AI Eraser Editing Feature”

OnePlus is dipping its toe into the AI space with its first feature for smartphones based on large language models.

The Chinese manufacturer announced on Wednesday, its AI Eraser proprietary image editing feature, which will be available especially for OnePlus smartphones including the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4. Availability is set to start in April, in a gradual rollout. There will be upcoming update announcements about more information for future device support, the brand said.

After competitor smartphone brands released their own AI features, such as Google’s Magic Eraser and Samsung’s AI photo editing, OnePlus is following suit with a function that can alter photos by removing artifacts on images that exist in the on-device Photo Gallery. Users manually highlight what they want removed and the AI will analyze the area and replace it with a suitable background that matches the image. OnePlus said it used an in-house large language model for this feature, which has been the product of considerable research and development and has been trained on an extensive dataset. This has given it the ability to interpret a myriad of different image types. The brand said its AI Eraser can be used to remove unwanted people, objects, or even native errors on the images themselves.

AI Eraser is set to be the first of many artificial intelligence features releasing for OnePlus in the coming year, President and COO, Kinder Liu said in a statement.

“We believe that the potential for generative AI on mobile devices is enormous, with the power to completely transform productivity and creativity. As OnePlus’ first feature based on generative AI technology, AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing,” he added.
