The Pixel Tablet 2 went from the top of the rumor mill to canceled in a matter of days. However, now that Google seems to have scrapped its 2025 tablet project, more details about the device have come to light.
Android Authority obtained specs details on the canceled Pixel Tablet 2, codenamed “kiyomi,” many that were already being speculated before the status of the device was made official. The information now known suggests the tablet would have been a decent upgrade in comparison to the original Pixel Tablet, but likely would have been incremental compared to the in competitors, with bigger overhauls to the line potentially coming with future Pixel models. With the cancelation of the Pixel Tablet 2, it is unknown whether Google is exiting the tablet market for good or just taking a break.
One of the primary upgrades the publication discussed was Google’s expected use of a Tensor G4 chip tailored for tablets. The publication detailed that the modifications in the SoC made it cheaper to produce; however, with its cancelation, we will never know how much it would have cost consumers. The original Pixel Tablet notably released in 2022 for $499 when Apple had just slashed the price of its 10th-generation iPad to $350.
The Pixel Tablet 2 would have also introduced a 5G variant, being powered by the same Exynos Modem 5400 modem seen in the Pixel 9 series. The 5G model will also allow GPS to be enabled on this model; however, the Wi-Fi model will not have that function. Android Authority noted that neither variant will support satellite connectivity or the Thread network protocol for IoT devices. The features are common on mobile devices, and the latter was set to be installed on the Pixel Tablet 2 but not activated.
The tablet was also slated for a display upgrade with a 10.95-inch 120 Hz LCD with 550 nits brightness. The device would have seen an increase in its refresh rate and brightness, both solid changes when the industry insists on shifting to OLED.
Camera-wise, the Pixel Tablet 2 was to be upgraded to a 10-megapixel selfie lens from the 8-megapixel lens in the original tablet, and the rear camera was to be an 11-megapixel autofocus lens, upgraded from the 8-megapixel lens in the first Pixel Tablet. Google was also shifting from Sony to Samsung lenses with the new tablet.
Finally, the Pixel Tablet 2 was getting a DisplayPort upgrade that would have allowed it to support output up to 4K. This feature would have put the Pixel Tablet 2 in compatibility with the Pixel phones. It would have also set the stage for future support DisplayPort upgrades with the also rumored 2027 Tensor G6 tablet, including output for up to four external displays, Android Authority noted.
Some of the main rumors that put attention on the Pixel Tablet 2 before its cancelation suggested that Google might have been testing some in-house accessories for the devices to make it more productivity focused. The accessories could have been an attachable keyboard cover and stylus, the latter of which had been considered as a feature for the original Pixel Tablet, according to prior reports.
There is no word on whether Google has plans to for these accessories for current or future products.
