Samsung showcased its yearly flagship refresh with the Galaxy S25 series on Wednesday, and added an interesting teaser that sent the mobile world into a tizzy.
The Korean manufacturer hinted that it would soon release a Galaxy S25 Edge model, though it didn’t give much further detail by way of specifications. Those in attendance at the Galaxy Unpacked noted that Samsung had a timeline on display, which included a tri-fold foldable device, alongside other hardware. This has led many to believe the upcoming device could be a tri-fold foldable.
In addition to several prior rumors hinting at a tri-fold foldable in the previous year, Samsung recently showcased tri-fold foldable prototypes at CES 2025 earlier this month. TechRadar Managing Editor, Matthew Bolton detailed having seen a prototype that fold like a Z as well as a prototype where left and right screens fold in like a book. The form factor Samsung teased the Z-shape, which is also similar to the Huawei Mate XT, notably released in fall 2024.
As soon as the launch event was over the rumor mill began to spin, with well known leakster Yogesh Brar, sharing on X that the upcoming smartphone may run a less powerful version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. The informant claims that the truncated processor has one less core, in comparison to the original Snapdragon 8 Elite chip– which is featured in the main Galaxy S25 series. The component is set to power foldables and “slim” design slate smartphones. Ahead of the Galaxy S25 Edge, the chip may power the OPPO Find N5/OnePlus Open 2 foldables.
Attempting to decipher the teaser trailer Samsung shared from home, I pondered whether Samsung might resurrect the Edge branding in conjunction with its legacy singular or dual edge curved screen form factor. The company did away with the Edge branding after the 2016 Galaxy Galaxy S7 Edge, and began using a flat display form factor after it introduced its foldable devices series in 2019.
