“Samsung’s next foldable could be the Galaxy Fold 2 with larger displays and S-Pen support”

Samsung’s next foldable is shaping up to be a very interesting device, with recently leaked specs revealing details about its front and inner displays. Industry analyst, Ross Young shared details about the next-generation foldable Monday, indicating that the device might be larger than the prior model and may also include a number of technological improvements to its display.

The upcoming foldable, which is currently being called the Galaxy Fold 2, may have a phone-to-tablet design, similar to the original Galaxy Fold. It may feature a 6.23-inch front display with a 2267 x 819 resolution and 60Hz refresh rate, as well as a notch or hole punch to house the front-facing camera.

The Galaxy Fold 2 inner display may fold out into a 7.59-inch screen with a 2213 x 1689 resolution, 372 dpi, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The inner display is expected to feature a hole punch to house its camera, as Samsung was supposedly unable to get its under panel camera technology ready in time for this device.

Several enthusiasts have already used the rumored schematics to generate renders of the upcoming device. For now, we can assume it will favor the original Galaxy Fold in terms of the overall design. Young also expects the Galaxy Fold 2 will have S-Pen stylus support, which has been a sought after feature by many fans of Samsung’s foldables.

The analyst detailed that the device may feature the same UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) technology that was introduced on the Galaxy Z Flip in February. Others now wonder if Samsung will improve on this technology so that a stylus won’t be detrimental to the integrity of the display. While UTG may be an improvement to the plastic that was used on the original Galaxy Fold, durability tests have determined that it is not actually solid glass, but rather potentially a plastic polymer with glass specs blended in. Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything found that the Galaxy Z Flip easily succumbed to fingernail scratches as well as direct heat.

Other Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 details

Prior rumors suggest that Samsung may start the Galaxy Fold 2 at a 256GB internal storage option to lower the entry price point for the foldable. Again, taking a cue from the Galaxy Z Flip, which launched at that same storage level with a $1,400 price tag. There may also be a 512GB model that could be priced higher, similar to the original Galaxy Fold, which sold for $1,980 at launch.

Samsung has reportedly begun production on Galaxy Fold 2 components and the device may be on track to release during the third quarter of 2020. The foldable may be announced alongside the rumored Galaxy Note 20 in its usual late summer, to early fall timeframe. There is also word that the Galaxy Fold 2 may release in the Martian Green and Astro Blue color options that were scrapped for the original Galaxy Fold amid its redesign due to issues with the device’s display.
