Several device makers have already showcased high-end smartphones with triple-camera and even quad-camera setups in 2018. Similar features are in the pipeline for more mid-range smartphones in early 2019 with the help of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chip.
Qualcomm announced the new chip at its 4G5G Summit in Hong Kong, China Monday. The chip quickly follows other components, including the Snapdragon 710 chip and the Snapdragon 670 chip, which were announced earlier this year and continue Qualcomm’s foray into adding premium features to mid-range chips.
In addition to supporting triple-lens cameras, the Snapdragon 675 will allow for more advanced gaming and a number of AI features on mid-range devices. The Snapdragon 675 features the latest Kryo 460 CPU, which includes technology intended for high-end chips. Its Spectra 250L image signal processor supports standard, wide angle, super wide angle, and telephoto lenses, as well as bokeh photography effects, facial recognition security features, and slo-mo video capture. Its AI integration also works to improve many camera and security features.
Other Snapdragon 675 specs include upgrades to its security protocol to secure facial recognition, the Snapdragon X12 modem, which allows for 600Mbps download speeds and 3x carrier aggregation, and the latest Qualcomm Hi-Fi and Bluetooth audio technologies.
Many smartphones have released in 2018 with the previous Snapdragon 660 chip as stepping stones into upcoming technology trends. Devices such as the Vivo V11 Pro and the Vivo X21, released with in-display fingerprint sensors, a feature which hasn’t yet made it on to high-end smartphones from the industry’s top players. With 5G expected to be at the helm of mobile technology in 2019, the Snapdragon 675 could aid many smartphone manufacturers in rolling out the hardware for the new standard at prices that won’t dissuade consumers.
