“Google reveals new Android Q features for World Emoji Day”

Enthusiasts have been delving into the new features coming to Android Q via the currently released betas, but we now have details on one of the most coveted smartphone features, emojis.

In commemoration of World Emoji Day, Google has confirmed that Android Q will get 65 new emojis. There are a number of interesting new emojis available, including different skin tones for popular gesture emojis, people in wheelchairs, guide dogs, and various cultural emojis, such as saris and a Diya lamp for Diwali. Some other fun emojis include a sloth, otter, garlic, and waffle. To further improve representation, there are also several emojis for interracial couples and gender-inclusive couples.

These emojis are all based on the Emoji 12.0 update, which was unveiled by the Unicode Consortium and Emojipedia in February. The update included 230 new emojis, but Google may save other symbols for future Android updates.

The official Android Q software will likely become available sometime in late-August, with Pixel smartphones and devices from Google’s Android beta partners getting first dibs at the new system version and the new emojis. Android Q may take time to make its rounds to devices by manufacturers including Samsung and LG. Many 2020 flagships from these companies will likely release running Android Q out of the box, with no need for an update.
