The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series may come in two models, including a standard version and a plus version, according to details from analyst, Ross Young.
The display supply chain expert shared details on the devices Monday, indicating that the Galaxy Note 20 may feature a 6.42-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 2345 x 1084 resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and 404 ppi. The Galaxy Note 20 Plus may feature a 6.87-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 3096 x 1444 resolution, 19.3:9 aspect ratio, and 497 ppi.
The devices are also set to have displays made with Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) backplane technology, which not only helps the display conserve power but helps support variable refresh rate switching. With device makers outfitting devices increasingly higher refresh rates, they have also included lower refresh presets for those that are concerned with use aspects, such as battery consumption. Variable refresh rate switching would allow the Galaxy Note 20 devices to transition between refresh rates in real-time, ultimately making them even more power-efficient. So far, we’ve seen this technology on devices including the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5.
Why no Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra?
Young also indicates that there will likely be no “Ultra” model for the Galaxy Note 20 series. In recent years, Samsung has announced several variants within its premium device families with varying features, including size, cameras, and 5G support. However, there has yet to be an Ultra model for the Note series by name.
In 2019, the brand introduced the Galaxy Note 10 series with a standard Galaxy Note 10, a Galaxy Note 10 Plus, and a Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, among its early forays into the new connectivity standard. At that time the only difference between the Galaxy Note 10 Plus and the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G was 5G connectivity.
Now, 5G has become more ubiquitous among Samsung devices, with all models in the Galaxy S20 series featuring the superfast network speeds. In addition to a standard Galaxy S20, a larger Galaxy S20 Plus, Samsung released the Galaxy S20 Ultra with an elaborate camera system that features a 108-megapixel camera and 100x zoom.
It is likely the Galaxy Note 20 series won’t have as fancy a camera set up to differentiate between the S-series. Preliminary rumors about the Samsung 2021 S-line suggest it may include an Ultra model with a 150-megapixel camera. Meanwhile, both Galaxy Note 20 models will likely power 5G, negating the need for a third model. Samsung’s S-Pen stylus remains a staple feature for the Note series. The brand also uses this device family to showcase various productivity software features, which we may see more of with the upcoming models.
