“Samsung Galaxy S22 US Models to Launch With Google Messages as Default Messages App”

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series will hit stores next Friday, but media reports have confirmed that U.S. models will release with the Google Messages app as their default messaging service.

9to5Google confirmed the change on a review model of a Galaxy S22 Plus device after speculation first came on the MKBHD Waveform podcast. Typically, Samsung uses its own Samsung Messages app, but the publication also noted that the brand has been making the switch over to Google Messages on models including the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 in Europe and other international regions.

With U.S. Galaxy S22 models using Google Messages by default, they will support As per 9to5google’s report, the US variants of the Galaxy S22 series now have Google Messages app pre-installed, and what’s more exciting is that this also bring RCS (Rich Communication Services), which allow for more advanced feature in texting treads, such as better emoji support and YouTube video previews, among others.

RCS is also the protocol on which other apps including Facebook Messenger and Telegram based, which would make for better cross platform compatibility. Major U.S. carriers have also announced using Google Messages as their default messaging app. Of course, Google’s own branded devices in the Pixel series such as the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 5a all use Google Messages their default messaging app.

Users interested in returning back to Samsung Messages can always do so by accessing Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > SMS app.
