Asus’ latest gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 2 has gone as quickly as it came with the device selling out in seconds after going on sale in China.
Asus held its first flash sale for the ROG Phone 2 on Wednesday and fans snapped up the first 10,000 units made available in just 73 seconds, according to GizChina. Though high demand for the device was expected, no one imagined that there would be such for such a specialty smartphone, as gaming phones remain somewhat niche in the mobile market.
The device manufacturer has reportedly collected over 2.5 million reservations from those intending to purchase the ROG Phone 2. Unlike preorders, reservations allow prospective customers to register for more details on product pricing and exact availability without any financial commitment. The practice has quickly become a common practice for manufacturers to drum up buzz around their new devices.
Asus has updated customers that other opportunities to purchase the ROG Phone 2 are coming soon, with future flash sales set for August 4, August 7, and August 12.
The ROG Phone 2 has been praised for its top-of-the-line specs on a gaming smartphone, which include a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is a first for Android devices. It also includes an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The device is also the first to run the Snapdragon 855+ chip, Qualcomm’s gaming-focused update to its premium chip series. Hardware-wise, the ROG Phone 2 includes 12GB of RAM and 256GB and 512GB internal storage options, and a 6,000 mAh battery with 30W fast charging and 10W reverse charging. For software, it runs Android 9 Pie with the options between the ROG launcher and Asus’ ZenUI 6 overlay.
Its rear dual camera set up includes a 48-megapixel, f/1.8, 26mm (wide) lens, and a 13-megapixel f/2.4, 11mm (ultrawide) lens. Its front camera has a 24-megapixel lens with f/2.2 aperture. The ROG Phone 2 is available in a black color option, with Asus’ signature LED logo panel on the back.
The ROG Phone 2 houses an impressive three USB-C ports, including it’s main bottom facing charging port, as well as two more on its left side. Users can connect various accessories to the handset.
The ROG phone 2 is currently selling in China for a 5,999 yuan or about $873. The device is expected to go in sale globally on September 4. Asus has not yet revealed U.S. pricing for the smartphone, but guesses suggest the device will sell for approximately $899 stateside.
