“Verizon Plans for Messages by Google to be Default RCS in 2022”

Verizon and Google recently announced their collaboration to make Messages by Google the default Rich Communications Service (RCS) messaging app for Android smartphones.

The change will begin in 2022 when Messages by Google will be preloaded on all Verizon Android devices. This will allow for various “rich-texting benefits, including higher-res video and photo sharing, typing notifications, and better group chat experiences,” the carrier said in a statement.

The standard will work over Wi-Fi or data and will support group chats and one-on-one conversations with end-to-end encryption.

Additionally, Verizon said RCS will allow those with businesses to use features that will let customers purchase products, make reservations, and ask questions, among other tasks.

Verizon follows the other major carriers, T-Mobile and AT&T, in establishing Google Messages as its default RCS text messaging app. AT&T just announced its own change earlier in July, while T-Mobile adopted the standard in March. However, Those using the Verizon Message+ app will have first access to RCS functionality by the end of the year.

RCS is already being utilized by over 444 million monthly active users in 60 countries according to GSMA.
