“March launch expected for Huawei’s smaller and cheaper foldable”

Huawei is expected to release its next foldable device in March, according to the Chinese publication My Drivers. The device may be a new and improved, yet cheaper version of the Huawei Mate X, which released in November after a significant delay.

The new smartphone may be called the Huawei Mate Xs, which could denote that it won’t be that much different from the original Mate X. There are a few details available for the Mate Xs, including reports that it may feature Huawei’s Kirin 990 premium chipset, 5G support, a redesigned hinge to be more sturdy.

It may also be slightly smaller than the original Huawei Mate X, which features an 8-inch display when open flat. The device folds and snaps closed, allowing there to be display real estate on each of its outer panels. Its dimensions are 161.3 x 78.3 x 11 mm folded and 161.3 x 146.2 x 5.4 mm flat.

Prior reports suggested that the Huawei Mate Xs might release in February, which would coincide with Mobile World Congress. The new reports pinpointing March leave the details a little marred; however, there is always a chance that the device could be announced in February and released to the market in March.

The Mate Xs likely won’t make it to the U.S. amid the government’s trade feud with Huawei. The foldable is expected to release in China, Europe, and a few other select markets.

Huawei claims that the current Mate X is selling well, at a rate of 100,000 handsets per month. The device retails at 16,999 yuan or about $2,400 or €2,200, so it will be interesting to see the price range the Mate Xs will fall under.
