“Motorola Edge S and Motorola Nio tag-team smartphone rumors ahead of January 26 launch event”

Lenovo is set to host an event on January 26, where it will unveil the Motorola Edge S smartphone. Though many decent rumors are circulating about the device, there is still a lot to unpack about this smartphone.

Motorola has teased that the Edge S will run the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 870, which will serve as a more standard flagship chip, in comparison to the top of the line Snapdragon 888. While many feature details have leaked about the Edge S, there hasn’t been much in terms of images. Meanwhile, recent live leaks have showcased a device being referred to as the Motorola Nio. Pundits have considered this device could be the Edge S under a different name.

The Motorola Edge S is expected to be branded for the Chinese market, in particular. Perhaps the Motorola Nio could be the same device branded for different markets. There is also a possibility Motorola Nio could be an internal codename for the Motorola Edge S that got out to the public.

Either way, much of the news about the referenced devices appear very similar. Live leaks of the Nio seem to match up with rumored specs for the Edge S, particularly information about cameras. Both tell of a quad-camera set up. Images of the Nio show a square module with two upper lenses and two lower lenses. Details about the Edge S indicate the setup includes a 64-megapixel main camera, a 16-megapixel ultrawide lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and a macro lens.

Additionally, the Nio leaks show a dual front camera hole-punch set up, while Edge S rumors suggest the device will include a 16-megapixel main selfie camera and an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens.

Meanwhile, specs associated more with the Motorola Edge S indicate a 6.7-inch Full HD+ display, possible 8GB and 12GB RAM options, 128GB and 256GB internal storage options, a 5,000mAh battery with 20W fast charging, and Android 11 software. Specs more associated with the Motorola Nio include a 105Hz refresh rate for its display, a desktop interface similar to Samsung DeX, a DisplayPort Alternate Mode, and a USB-C port. Some of these rumors so notably overlap, further suggesting some similarity or association.

Another possibility could be that the Motorola Nio and Motorola Edge S could be part of a series, which may have similar specs, but could ultimately have some differentiating features. There is word that the Motorola Nio could be the higher end of the two, possibly still running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip instead of the 870.

Whatever the truth behind the Motorola Edge S/Motorola Nio, Lenovo will confirm details in a matter of days.
