“How the 2019 Pixel 3 XL Lite may be different from old Nexus smartphones”

Google’s long-rumored budget tier Pixel devices could be released on Verizon come spring 2019 if recent reports are to be believed. Android Police shared these launch details Thursday, following up specs rumors that surfaced in November.

While unconfirmed, less expensive Pixel devices would be an interesting play for Google at this point. The tech giant has released several generations of premium tier smartphones, with prices rapidly increasing, much to the chagrin of many developers and Android purists who were fans of the old, price-friendly Nexus line.

Google has long released hardware to show off the latest Android software the way the company intends it to function before it goes through extreme modification from other device manufacturers. The company stepped into the premium circle as to not lose shine among Samsung and Apple products that were becoming increasingly more high-tech and expensive.

While not flashy in design, the simplicity of Nexus devices won the hearts of many. The devices often used chips in the Qualcomm Snapdragon premium tier, but also had some truncated specs to keep prices low. Google added OLED displays to the Pixel devices and stuffed them with more memory and storage. Still, one major criticism remains that their designs, outwardly, don’t seem much different from the Nexus devices, while selling for least double the price.

The new devices may come in 5.5-inch Pixel 3 Lite and 6-inch Pixel 3 XL lite models with a Snapdragon 670 or Snapdragon 710 chip, according to Russian leaskster, Rozetked. These components are in the mid-tier but are likely comparable, if not a tad more powerful than the high-end processors of 2015. Other rumored specs include 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 12-megapixel rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front camera.

Less expensive Pixels would also be an interesting move for Verizon, as the company has long paired itself with the most expensive and top-of-the-line smartphones. The network is beginning to embrace the affordable flagship, as the unlocked OnePlus 6T is SIM compatible with Verizon. Google’s hardware collaboration with Verizon likely won’t end any time soon, making the carrier the obvious choice as a network partner for the Pixel 3 Lite devices. Still, Google sells most of its devices unlocked as well.
